My Story
Hello Everyone! I have been selected to participate in the UCDVO Volunteering & DevelopmentEducation Programme this July. UCDVO is a registered charity which provides UCD students, staff and alumni the opportunity to engage in volunteering and development education programme for the benefit of disadvantaged communities overseas, in response to needs explicitly identified by those communities. I am raising money in honour of the Kisiizi Hospital, Church of Uganda. This is a non-for profit development in rural south-west Uganda, providing holistic healthcare to the local community. Myself and a team of 18 UCDVO volunteers will be travelling to Uganda for 4 weeks in July 2020 to work as part of a multi-disciplinary team with Physiotherapy, Medical, Nursing and Dietetic students and tutors. I will be part of the clinical nutrition team, focusing on malnutrition screening, management and prevention. Most importantly, we will collaborate with healthcare professionals in the area to facilitate sustainable, ongoing provision of health promoting services for the community. UCD physiotherapy students run a disability camp at Kisiizi Hospital for children with cerebral palsy and their families. As a team, we will help educate the families on how to care for their loved ones, and provide much needed medical equipment to improve their quality of life. I will provide nutrition and hydration education workshops and monitor the nutritional status’ of the children. We will also pioneer public health development projects at the hospital, and local primary school. €1,200 goes directly to the hospital to help with the provision of physiotherapy equipment, prostheses, educational resources, refurbishment of the hospital building as well as to cover the cost of all the children and mothers attending cerebral palsy rehabilitation camp. Any donation, big or small, would be greatly appreciated. “Development education aims to deepen understanding and encourage people towards taking action for a more just and equal world”. – Irish Aid http://www.kisiizihospital.org.ug/
