My Story
Hi all
My name is Aoife Cahill, and I am a final year MSc Physiotherapy student in University College Dublin. For my sixth and final physiotherapy placement, I have been granted the opportunity to work with UCD Volunteers Overseas charity, at Ferrando Speech and Hearing Centre, in Shillong, Northeast India.
About the Project
UCD Volunteers Overseas has been sending voluntary physiotherapists to work with Ferrando Speech and Hearing Centre since 2014. The centre is a school for children with hearing, speech and physical disabilities. There are three resident physiotherapists on site, with whom we will be working with to provide much needed physiotherapy. The project will run for four weeks, two of which will be spent treating the schoolchildren and the local community, and two will be spent providing a treatment camp for children with cerebral palsy. We will also have the opportunity to work alongside the local orthotist to build and supply orthotic and seating devices for children and families.
The project will also include health awareness campaigns within the local community, whereby we will provide education on topics such as identifying and managing disability, and antenatal and postnatal care for women.
Here is a video of some of the fantastic work done by the UCD Volunteer Overseas group in 2014: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w_CBTAp8JHk
Fundraising
To take part in the project, I am required to raise €2,600. The money raised will go directly to UCD Volunteers Overseas charity, and will be used to fund the healthcare project outlined above, as well allow me to participate in the project, including travel and living costs. I would greatly appreciate any help you can give.
Upcoming Months
Over the coming months, I will be taking part in pre-departure volunteer training. This includes team building, development education, skills building, language and culture workshops (including sign language), health & safety training, ethical volunteering and intercultural learning. This year-long programme UCD Volunteers Overseas provides will allow me to use my skills to benefit the project as best as possible in the four weeks abroad.
Thank you in advance for you help!
