Hey guys, as a few of you may know I am studying physiotherapy in UCD. As part of this I am lucky enough to have been chosen to volunteer as part of the Development Education Programme in Nansana, Uganda this year. Myself alongside 20 UCD students from areas including physio, medicine, nutrition, nursing, psychology, business and midwifery will be working alongside Irish organisation Nurture Africa. The organisation has done amazing work in the past nuturing the development of vunerable children and adults through healthcare, education and sustainable livlihood projects. Over a four week period I will be working with other physiotherapy students and staff in the Nurture Africa Healthcare Centre to provide rehabilitation services and care. We will be running a family-orientated rehabilitative camp for local children with conditions such as cerebral palsy, spina bifida and hydrocephalus. We will be working with these children and their families throughout the camps to provide physiotherapy treatment as well as education to ensure continution of therapy.  As well as this the money we raise will go toward the provision of equipment and assistive devices including crutches, standing-frames, walking-frames and wheelchairs. We have each been asked to raise a total of €2,650.  €1,200 of this goes directly towards the development project including buying physiotherapy equipment such as mobility aids. Funds will also support the further education of staff and the families, development of facilities and the provision of care after we have left the project.
